City on the Search for New Finance Director

Ellen Eggeman left her post as finance director to work at Portsmouth Abbey School.

East Providence Finance Director Ellen Eggeman will be leaving her municipal post on May 18 after she accepted a position at Portsmouth Abbey School.

According to City Manager Peter Graczykowski, he hopes to fill her position by July. An advertisement for the job that will also oversee the school department's finances is on the city's website and SchoolSpring.com, an education site for teachers. [Click here for the full job description.]

"Under the direction of the City Manager and the Superintendent of Schools, this position assumes responsibility for the direction, planning, coordination and administration of all financial affairs of the city, including its school department," reads an announcement on the city's website.

A RFP to hire an outside agency or individual to run financial operations - before a permanent hire is found to fill the consolidated position - will be issued in the upcoming days, said Graczykowski.

According to Eggeman, she has experience in the academic realm. She previously worked as a finance director for University of Massachusetts (UMass) Dartmouth and in Westerly's school district.

She is confident her colleagues can handle the financial responsibilities.

"I have been very impressed with the finance department staff," she said on Friday afternoon. "They have risen to the occassion, have never complained even in light of the uncertainty and stress [caused] by the budget commission."

Mary King, finance director for the school district also recently announced her resignation.

Looks like the ship is sinking and everyone is jumping ship! So sad that this is what East Providence has come to.

why should they stay in a financially ruined town?? or state for that matter???

when will people from rhode island wake up and vote for new people. it is better to vote for a skunk than to keep the same rodents (rats) in office.
get folks. throw out the thiefs, liars, cheats and start fresh. there are republicans, independents and so on. anything is better than the democrats that have put this state into the swamp and it keeps sinking deeper and deeper into the hole.

WAKE UP AND SMELL THE STENCH OF THE CURRENT POLITICIANS WHAT EVER PARTY THEY MAY BELONG TO.
GET RID OF THEM THROW OUT INTO THE TRASH AND DO NOT RECYCLE.

Two new Directors of Finance (City and School) and the new Director of Human Resources all leaving. If your going to blame this on a politician then you'd better be blaming the governor. Why are all of the top people who deal with the Budget Commission leaving. What do they know that the rest of us taxpayers aren't hearing? Something is going on behind closed doors. These people didn't create these problems because they just got here. "I have been very impressed with the finance department staff," she said on Friday afternoon. "They have risen to the occassion, have never complained even in light of the uncertainty and stress [caused] by the budget commission." In my opinion that statement is Ms. Eggeman trying to tell us that we had better start paying attention to what this budget commission is doing to our city.

ALL RHODE ISLAND politicians are guilty - stop protecting some and blaming others.
No one blamed the actual operating people, like directors etc,
The politicians past and present ones are guilty of mismanagement and misappropriation of funds.
Rhode island is a physically geirgeous state but the crooks that ran and are running this state must be run out of office.
This starts with all including the governor NO EXCEPTIONS
This state is in financial ruins and guess who got you there and just like OBAMA they want more of our money instead of living within their means.
Try going to your boss or client/customer and say I need more money because I want to spend more?
The days of the free rides are OVER.

All you need to know about EP is in this article

Everyone is throwing stones at OKeefe and the Budget Commission but no one shows up.

And classic of all classics is that Ward 1 Councilwoman Kleyla doesnt show up to her own forum.

And the rumor is Moura is setting her up for the State House!!!!

EP is a joke.......

She was in way over her head. All you have to do is watch the council meetings to see that, never prepared and could never answer questions. Hopefully some one that is qualified throws their hat in the ring..

Katie Kleyla could well be the most intellectually lazy, most ineffective, most disconnected and most inarticulate individual that has represented Ward one in recent memory (and we've had some winners). She makes Tommy Rose look like Winston Churchill by comparison.

As she would say, in her own inimitable way: "So I was, like, Paul Mora, you want me at the State House? And he's, like, 'duh? Yeah'. So I said 'OK, but can I bring my laptop so that I can download ITunes?' And he's like, 'Sure sweetheart, just vote the way I tell you to vote'. So I'm like, 'sure!' I can't wait to see the house where the State lives!"

No question two very qualified individuals with impecable credentials have decided to make career moves. Let's remove the politics from that. Check to see how long these people were in these jobs and how well they managed them. I say managed because they had to take their orders from the city council or school committee. They are giving sufficient notice of departure to the city manager and the school committee for replacement and they are moving on. Yes, the city has a mess on its hands, not as bad as other municipalities in this state but the hard decisions are being done. Finance directors operate in the parameters given them by their superiors. I say "thank you for your service and good luck in your future endeavors."

I and others wish Ms Eggeman good luck in her new position.

She did a good job for the city with what she has had to work with.
