City and Volunteers Give Food Baskets to Families in Need

The Affirmative Action and Human Resources Department gave out nearly 100 baskets to families in need of food for the holiday.

Elmer Pina sees more need than he can satisfy. The director of the Affirmative Action and Human Resources Department for the City of East Providence has given away more than 70 food baskets to families in need, has 15 more to give away to families on Wednesday and knows there are many more families who will struggle to hold a traditional Thanksgiving meal with all the fixings.

"It's tough out there," Pina said. It's also tough for some people to admit they could use some help. Many people are ashamed to come forth, especially to Pina's office in City Hall, to accept giveaways. Pina said he'll meet residents in the parking lot to give out a loaf of bread. "They've got a lot of pride," he said.

Students affiliated with the The East Providence Community Coalition (EPCC) helped put together baskets that contain canned vegetables, stuffing, soups and either a whole turkey or gift certificate to buy one.

"We're helping families who don't have the means," said Carlos Gomez, 16, as he checked expiration dates on baby food.

City employees were some of the biggest givers to the drive. Local businesses also chipped in.

"When people ask me what they should donate, I ask them, 'What do you eat on Thanksgiving?' " said Pina.

On Thursday, Pazi's Place will be hosting a  for those who would otherwise be alone or need a hot meal. The effort was coordinated with Pina's office.
