Golf Pro Plans Cross-Country Bike Ride To Support Haiti Recycling Relief

Devin Beck, PGA golf professional at Wannamoisett Country Club in Rumford, seeks donations to go toward building plastic recycling facilities in Haiti.

It should be a journey of a lifetime.

Tiverton resident Devin Beck trained all summer to ride his bike 3,200 miles across the country next month for a good cause. He will be riding to raise funds for the non-profit organization Executives Without Borders and their ongoing work in Haiti.

Beck, 23, also a PGA golf professional at Wannamoisett Country Club in Rumford, leaves for Jacksonville, FL on Jan. 10 and plans to leave Jan. 11 to ride from St. Augustine, FL to San Diego, CA. He will be sleeping in a tent and searching for affordable lodging along the way.

"I will only be able to carry what I can fit on my bicycle and will be forced to eat out for every meal," Beck said in a recent interview. "My personal costs for the trip will be significant. However, I am committed to completing it to raise money and awareness for a great cause."

The projected goal is to raise $2,000 in donations. On Monday, Beck's fundraising website stated that $940 is raised so far. Tax deductible contributions can be made there. Some funding will be used to get supplies for his trip.

He said all the money raised for his ride will go to Executive Without Borders' "From Trash to Cash" program in Haiti, also known as Ramese Lajan. Two of the biggest problems in Haiti, which were exasperated by the devastating earthquake in 2010, are the lack of good paying jobs and the incredible amount of plastic waste throughout the country, Beck noted.

"This plastic waste is clogging canals and contributing to the spread of deadly waterborne diseases, such as cholera," he said. "It is also washing up on Haiti’s beautiful beaches and hurting tourism, which can be a major economic boost. But, the very same plastic that is causing all of these problems also presents an opportunity for job creation through plastic recycling across the country."

So, Beck said Executives Without Borders and their partners in Haiti created "From Trash to Cash," which builds plastic collection centers across the country.

"Now, Haitians can clean up their community and be paid a fair wage for their hard work," Beck added. "And since each center is Haitian-owned and operated, the program will create jobs and promote opportunity all across Haiti."

A friend's interest in helping Haiti in 2010 gave Beck the idea to focus his efforts on the earthquake-ravaged country. He said his friend, from Methodist University in North Carolina where Beck finished as an undergraduate, came back from Haiti and all he could talk about were the tent cities "as far as the eye could see."

"It hit me," Beck said. "I've got to try to do something to help these people."

He will ride his Wellington 1.0, and said he's been averaging a 15-mile ride two times a week since the summer. Since there's no work at the country club this winter, Beck wanted to take a cross-country route that was warm. He mapped out his southern course using www.adventurecycling.org.

Cash or check donations can be sent to Devin Beck, 96 Hoyt Ave, Rumford, RI 02916.
