Hands That Rock: Riverside Masseuse Darcy Lynch Has Celebrity Clientele

Riverside woman may be East Providence's best-kept secret.

Darcy Lynch wheeled her massage table into Boston’s House of Blues as the headliner prepared for the sound check. After a familiar walk to the dressing room area punctuated with hellos, Lynch waited on word as to where she would set up. It wasn’t long before a voice behind the second level office door confirmed the paradox that defines Lynch’s professional life: “Darcy, love, you’re in the electrical closet again.”

As the mic checks and guitar strumming from band members on tour with Zappa Plays Zappa echoed through the House of Blues, Lynch began to set up her table, sheets and oils among the circuit breakers and cans of soda.

“Rock and roll,” she said. “Glamorous, isn’t it?”

It's hard to reconcile that the behind the scenes of a popular concert is not comprised of gold-plated fixtures and red carpets, and it’s downright surreal to think that the woman offering a first-class massage inside a utility room is regarded as a rock and roll insider. From Rhode Island’s Twin River Event Center, to Boston’s House of Blues and TD Banknorth Garden, the name Darcy Lynch is associated with familiar warmth and physical relief by those who keep the machinery of huge tours humming.

As she exited the electrical closet, smelling of sandalwood and jasmine, she was stopped by Billy Hulting, percussionist and tour manager on tour with Zappa Plays Zappa.

“This April, are you still going to sail with me when you get to L.A.?” Hulting asked.

After confirming their upcoming adventure in the Pacific, she asked, “How was the therapist I sent you in Biloxi?”

The founder of Stage Hands Massage Therapy, a company providing licensed massage therapists to touring acts around the globe, Lynch is anything but ordinary. Specializing in Ashiatsu Bar therapy (which literally has her walking on the backs of her clients), the 47-year-old mother and owner of Riverside’s Waves of Healing has had an unconventional path to her current profession. She’s worked in television and film production, journalism. Since then, the hands and feet of Lynch and her employees have soothed the shoulders of Alicia Keys, Roger Waters, and members of Nine Inch Nails and Weezer, to name a few.

With massage therapists in every major city in the world, Lynch Skypes with her employees weekly, running her business from her Riverside living room. When the tours come to New England, however, it’s Lynch who does the massaging.

“Sometimes when you show up to a venue, you never know where you’re going to be doing the actual massaging,” said Lynch. “I’ve worked in rooms with leaking pipes and stinky furniture, but I love it. I don’t see obstacles, I see opportunities.”

The electrical closet at the House of Blues was a step up from being rained on via bad plumbing. Two days later, she was afforded a virtual kingdom in the way of curtained-off space at the Usher concert at TD Banknorth Garden.

Even in the labyrinthine corridors of an eighteen-thousand person arena, Lynch got treated like an old friend by the touring staff. Guarding the hallway to Usher’s dressing room, an event staffer high fived Lynch with the greeting, “the Grande Dame of deep-tissue!”

It wasn't long before the talent, intrigued by the Ashiatsu bars, came into Lynch’s world, just as she had come into theirs. Within an hour, Liz LeGrande, a backup dancer for Usher, was on the table with Lynch’s feet on her back. Concert DJ Fatman Scoop and another dancer followed suit.

“That was the best of the tour yet,” said LeGrande.

“Well, I’m glad,” said Lynch. “We’ve booked your tour, so look for my therapists in Europe next year."

While Lynch often conversed with the venue’s event staff and performers, she prefers to be inconspicuous and coaches her therapists to be the same.

“Bring your own tape to put up signs, and don’t ask the tour manager for anything,” she once instructed to a new hire at a backstage show. “They’re busy enough. We’re here to add to the show, not be the show.”

Even so, she garners praise from people like Jon Bumgarner, production manager for Usher’s current tour.

“We’ve hired other companies in the past,” Bumgarner said. “Stage Hands is always on time and professional. When I came on to work with Usher, there was really no other choice. We were going with Darcy again.”

After Usher's concert, Lynch exited the TD Banknorth Garden and wheeled her heavy Ashiatsu bars into the staff parking lot, showing a surprisingly high spirit despite the late hour and low temperature.

“The other day I was watching my daughter play in a music recital,” she said. “This is a long way from that!”

Packing up her minivan with equipment, she muttered something about beating traffic and drove back to Rhode Island to be East Providence's best-kept secret.

I'm glad to see Darcy get some PR because as the piece says, she may be one of the best-kept secrets in East Providence. I have been lucky enough to be a client of hers for a number of years, and one of the things I most look forward to is a trip to her studio and letting her work her magic.

I am really glad to see Darcy get some PR. As the article says, she may be one of the best kept secrets in the area. As a client for several years I can tell you that one of the things I most look forward to is my monthly trip to her studio where she works her magic. The atmosphere is great and the massage simply the best.

Darcy is even better than all that. Darcy treats my special friend each week. She cannot speak or walk without assistance but when she is with Darcy she is as free as a bird. Darcy shows her love and compassion and she gets her disabled body all loosened up. My friend never laughs louder than when Darcy is working with her on the mat and body ball. Darcy is amazing and we are blessed to have her in our lives.
