Oldham School Targeted for Closing
One of the oldest and the smallest elementary school in East Providence would be shut down before September.
Oldham School in Riverside – one of the oldest and the smallest elementary schools in East Providence -- has been targeted for closure in September.
All of the pupils but new kindergarten kids and the staff would be moved to Waddington Elementary School in Riverside. Kindergarten pupils would attend the Meadowcrest School.
Interim Superintendent John DeGoes made that recommendation to the East Providence School Committee Thursday night in City Hall after being charged by the East Providence Budget Commission to trim the school budget by closing a school because of declining enrollment.
“It’s the best move at this time, the only move,” said DeGoes. “Any other move would be cost-prohibitive.”

So how does this affect the students that are at Waddinginton and Meadowcrest? Does this move mean more students in a single classroom? Are there enough classrooms to accomodate the influx of students? Has quality of education been accessed or just the cost savings?
