Police Recover Stolen Car, Meats

East Providence police officers recovered a stolen vehicle and approximately $700 worth of packaged meats allegedly stolen from a Providence supermarket on Monday morning, Feb. 4, by four Massachusetts men and women.

Police believe the food items were stolen from a Stop & Shop to be resold for cash for eventual purchase of heroin. 

The stolen vehicle, a black Lexus, was spotted heading east on Route 195 by an East Providence patrol officer about 11 am. A check with the national crime information database confirmed that the vehicle was reported stolen by a Massachusetts man.

The driver of the Lexus pulled off Route 195 and entered the Sunoco gas station on Warren Avenue with the police cruiser behind it. Several other East Providence patrol officers responded at the same time.

Police immediately arrested the driver, Antonio Nobre, 37, of South Dartmouth, Mass., for possession of the stolen vehicle. He was later charged with receiving stolen goods and conspiracy after police found the meat products in the vehicle. 

A search of the vehicle also found a syringe and heroin believed to belong to Kaitlin E. Ginty, 28, of New Bedford, who admitted to being a heroin addict, according to the arrest report. She was charged with receiving stolen goods and conspiracy. 

Two other passengers in the vehicle, Melinda M. Caven, 28, of Fairhaven, and Kyle R. Carey, 24, of Acushnet, also were charged with receiving stolen goods and conspiracy, according to East Providence police.

Surveillance video in the store identified the two women as piling the meat in a cart and leaving the store without paying for it, according to the arrest report. Among the items reported stolen were hams, ribs, rack of lamb, pork loin and tenderloins, roasts and steak, according to an inventory of the items. 

The police report indicates that Ginty told police officers they planned to sell the meats. The arrest report doesn't indicate to whom they would sell the stolen items.
