Here are five things you should know today in East Providence.

- Trying to lose weight? Try Take Off Pounds Sensibly, known as TOPS, which meets at the Riverside Congregational Church with a weigh-in at 6 pm.
- There's a "Born to Read" Storytime, just for the little ones, at Weaver Library today.
- Today is Australia Day, the date recognized as the founding of Australia in 1788 when Captain Arthur Phillip guided a fleet of 11 British ships carrying convicts to the colony of New South Wales. Read more about it here.
