Vets Parkway Exit to Close Nov. 24
RIDOT postpones the closure of the bridge that carries Exit 4 traffic from Route 195 to Veterans Parkway until Saturday.
The closure of the Route 195 exit to Veterans Memorial Parkway in East Providence will now take place on Saturday, Nov. 24.
The RI Department of Transportation announced last Friday, Nov. 16, that it postponed the closure of Exit 4 to the parkway about a week. National Grid must first activate a temporary traffic signal at the end of Exit 5 before it can close Exit 4 to the parkway, RIDOT said in a press release.
The extension of an electrical connection to the temporary signal could not be completed on schedule, said RIDOT.
Exit 5 is not a detour for the ramp being closed. But RIDOT said it expects more traffic on this exit and wanted to add the temporary traffic light to improve safety at the intersection with Warren Avenue.
The bridge at Exit 4 to the parkway is being closed for rehabilitation until next summer. The left lane on Exit 4, which leads to Taunton Avenue, will remain open. It was rebuilt previously.
Cost of the rehabilitation is estimated at $2 million. It is part of a larger project to preserve the old Washington Bridge and transform it into a linear park and bikeway, according to RIDOT.
