Volunteers Come Out to Help Rebuild East Providence

Community leaders and volunteers helped out on several projects around the city Saturday.

More than 400 volunteers came out Saturday to help paint, landscape and repair several sites around East Providence.

Rebuilding Together Providence brought volunteers from MetLife, Sears Holdings, Textron, Rhode Island Housing, Gilbane Building Co. and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Rhode Island to help out around East Providence.

"We come into people's lives as strangers, they certainly don't know us before they meet us," said Jane Eskelund, executive director of Rebuilding Together Providence. "...And we become friends."

City leaders and community volunteers also assisted with the effort.

Whiteknact and Oldham elementary schools received repairs like repainted gyms and landscaping. Volunteers and members of the Cape Verdean Progressive Center also helped paint and repair the building, which had a fire.

Volunteers also made major repairs to homes on Appian Way, Park Drive and Martello Street.

Check out the videos of the volunteers working.
