Today is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day – a floating federal holiday on the third Monday of January designated to celebrate the renowned civil rights activist’s birthday on Jan. 15.
King is remembered for many achievements, but perhaps his most famous public address was his "I Have A Dream" speech on Aug. 28, 1963 in Washington, D.C., part of the historic March on Washington. See a video of the speech on the right.
But not everything is shutting down today. For many businesses, it will be business as usual.
What's open:
- Most retail stores
- Many restaurants
- Banking ATMs
Closed:
- The East Providence City Hall
- U.S. Post Offices
- Weaver Library and the Riverside branch library
- East Providence schools
- Most banks
Trash won't be picked up today. You should have put out your trash last Saturday if your normal pickup day is today.
