What Would You Ban in E.P.?
A bag on plastic grocery and takeout bags began Jan. 1 in nearby Barrington. What would you ban in East Providence? Bags? Bottles? Styrofoam cups?
A ban on plastic grocery and takeout bags began on Jan. 1 in nearby Barrington. It grew out of a Roger Williams University professor's concern about the impact of the bags on the environment.
Other municipalities in New England have banned bottles (Concord, Mass.), plastic bags and Styrofoam cups (Brookline, Mass.) and seasonal leaf blowers (Arlington, Mass.).
Most schools ban peanut butter or peanut-based foods and most have switched over to healthy snacks and drinks in vending machines.
The bans all started somewhere with someone. Maybe with you?

I would ban plastic bags. They are produced using petroleum, which we fight wars over & need for heating, etc. They end up in trees, on streets and are unhealthy to use to store food. If they end up in the Bay or the ocean, they can kill sea gulls, turtles, fish & mammals, as they are often mistaken for food. I strongly urge the city to ban plastic bags, then Styrofoam, as it interacts with anything acidic (do you have lemon with your tea??) and is a contributing factor in testicular cancer.
