Riverside Resident Receives Congressional Recognition for Artwork

Kayla DelBonis was acknowledged for her artistry.

U.S. Congressman David Cicilline announced the winners of his 2012 Congressional Art Competition. Natalie Paris, Alek Comella, and Maxwell Silva were the winners of his 2012 Congressional Art Competition. Riverside resident Kayla DelBonis received congressional recognition, according to a press release. “These talented Rhode Island students make our state proud with their creativity and artistic ingenuity. I look forward to seeing their work on display, and I thank everyone who helped make this competition possible. Each work submitted through my office was exceptional, and I only regret that we could choose just one winner,” said Cicilline. Chorus of East Providence Changes Weekend Venue

This weekend's shows will be held at Seekonk High School instead of East Providence's Martin Middle School.

Due to unforeseen technical difficulties, the Chorus of East Providence will perform this weekend's shows at Seekonk High School instead of East Providence's Martin Middle School as previously announced. The production, entitled “Sentimental Journey – Music of the Greatest Generation,” features a nostalgic variety of popular favorites, jazz standards and show tunes of the '40s. Seekonk High School is located at 261 Arcade Avenue, at Ledge Road. Ample parking is available. Curtain times are 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 28, and 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 29. Tickets are $12, with priority seating available for $20. Children under 12 are admitted free.

Cupcake Madness Brings on the Sugary Insanity

Cupcake Madness at The Village Inn drew about 1,000 people Wednesday afternoon as bakers from all over the state gathered to compete in the confectionary competition. One of those people was East Providence area resident Tracy Amoroso. Cupcakes of every imaginable flavor and design were arrayed to tempt the collective willpower of the teeming crowds - which, on several occasions, was found wanting. But there were no tears shed for dieters this day - only smiles and lighthearted conversationStep as bakers of every stripe showed off their skills.

Artists Wanted to Paint Mural on Wampanoag Trail Overpass

The Rhode Island of Transportation is holding a pre-proposal meeting at 9 a.m. today for muralists to ask questions.

The scenery along I-195 is about to get a bit brighter.  The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (DOT) is seeking proposals from qualified outdoor muralists to paint a wall along I-195's Wampanoag Trail overpass. This is part of a project spearheaded by Governor Lincoln Chafee's office. The mural's design depicting a fleet of sailboats has been selected by a committee and is included in the project's RFP. The mural needs to be completed by May 25, 2012.  A pre-proposal meeting to review the RFP and ask questions of DOT staff is set for March 27 at 9 a.m. at the Rhode Island Department of Transportation's Traffic Management Center Conference Room located at 2 Capitol Hill in Providence. East Providence Tattoo Artists Say Your Grandfather's Ink is Cool Again

Traditional tattoo stylings are making a comeback.

Remember that old Sailor Jerry tattoo that your grandfather used to hide under a shirt sleeve? Well, it's now in vogue. According to tattoo artists at East Providence Tattoo, the more "traditional" tats are making a comeback, with a bit more polish. "The shading is more fine," manager Erica Smith said, "There's a specific look to it." And other more modern stylings haven't left the scene yet, like tribal marking, though some artists would like its heyday to come. "Some people just want tribal," said owner Jesus Rios who opened his Pawtucket Avenue shop next to a lawyer's office. Ink isn't limited to men. High School Senior Wins Gold Key Award

East Providence Council members honored high school artists for their work shown at the Weaver Library.

East Providence High School student Sarah Phillips along with her artistically inclined peers were recognized for their work shown at the Weaver Library to celebrate Youth Art Month during Tuesday night's council meeting.  According to Ms. Barry, an art teacher at the school, the senior was given a special award for her wicker sculpture of an exotic insect after she was entered in the Scholastic Art and Writing Competition sponsored by Salve Regina University. The contest featured a variety of visual art including paintings, fashion, sculptures, and photography. Sarah's piece won a gold key award, according to reports from The Townie, an East Providence High School student newspaper.

Bank of America Donates 10K to School Art and Cultural Programs

The celebration was held an event at the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra & Music School.

The Rhode Island State Council on the Arts (RISCA) announced Thursday that a $10,000 grant from Bank of America that will be directed towards the Big Yellow School Bus (BYSB) program, according to a press release. With schools facing restricting financial challenges, these funds will help ensure that more than 7,500 Rhode Island students throughout the state attend arts and cultural events in 2012. Since 2010, RISCA's Big Yellow School Bus Program has helped facilitate field trips to museums, concert halls and theaters across the state. The program has been extremely beneficial for schools, many of whom are reducing or eliminating field trips out of economic necessity. PHOTOS: Artist's Work Invokes Spirit of St. Valentine

East Providence resident Cheryl Adams-Johnson work capture important moments of love in people's lives.

"I feel like I have been taking pictures most of my life," writes photographer Cheryl Adams-Johnson. The East Providence resident graduated from UMass Dartmouth in 1992 with a degree in photography and a minor in painting. While the photography world was transitioning from film to digital, she painted for 10 years in a studio in Boston where she also coordinated art shows in alternative spaces. After leaving Boston in 1997, Adams-Johnson lived in the East Bay, the East Side, and finally East Providence where she has resided for 10 years. "I love my neighborhood and the little glimpses of natural space around Willet Pond and the bike path." The artist enjoys capturing the special moments in people's lives. Lisa Lunt creates jewelry using a variety of items, including beads, crystals and Lego parts.

Riverside resident Lisa Lunt runs a jewelry making business called Ahhtistic Expressions. She works with fresh water pearls, natural stones, Swarovski crystals, mother-of-pearl, shell and wooden beads. "I look for bead stores wherever I travel and try to find something unique to the area," she writes in an e-mail. "I’ve always enjoyed making things with my hands. Art has also been a wonderful therapeutic tool in my work with children and families. It’s a great creative activity with my son, who apparently inherited the creative gene, and enjoys making jewelry also!" she writes.
