This massive winter storm named Nemo (since when do we name blizzards?) turned out to be a doosey. Hundreds of thousands of my fellow New Englanders lost power and heat. There were driving bans in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut punishable by large fines or even jail time.
As soon as Massachusetts lifted the ban Saturday afternoon, I decided to head out with my camera and try to find some beauty amongst all the havoc this storm caused. Parking in these conditions is always tricky for me because I don’t have a 4wd or AWD vehicle, but I lucked out.
The parking area for the Turner Reservoir trailhead in East Providence was being used as a turnaround/staging area for East Providence DPW snowplows, so I pulled in there and off I went into the forest. I was the first one to be in there, and that for me is always special. The sunset turned out to be gorgeous, especially with the new fallen snow. I learned that I should probably get a pair of snowshoes, as I got one heck of a workout trudging almost a mile each way in 20 inches of snow with 25 lbs of camera gear on my back!
