Five Things for Monday: City Offices Closed, Trash Collection & More

Here are some of the news and events happening around East Providence for Monday, October 8, 2012.

East Providence Weather:

  • Monday: Partly sunny, with a high near 58. Northwest wind 3 to 6 mph.
  • Monday Night: A chance of rain, mainly after 11pm. Cloudy, with a low around 45. Light east wind. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Columbus Day: All East Providence city offices closed. East Providence libraries and schools are also closed.

Trash Collection: The East Providence Public Works/Recycling/Refuse Department announces that there is no pickup of all household refuse, recycling and yard waste regularly collected on Monday October 8, 2012 because of the Columbus Holiday. Regular Monday collection will resume on Monday, October 15, 2012. Residents are asked to have all materials at the curb by 6:00 A.M. on the day of collection.

Ballroom Dance Classes: Relearn all the old moves and learn some new ones today at 2pm at the East Providence Senior Activity Center, 610 Waterman Avenue in East Providence. Singles are welcome. The cost of the class is $3.00pm.

This Day in History: On this day in 1871, flames spark in the Chicago barn of Patrick and Catherine O'Leary, igniting a two-day blaze that kills between 200 and 300 people, destroys 17,450 buildings, leaves 100,000 homeless and causes an estimated $200 million (in 1871 dollars; $3 billion in 2007 dollars) in damages. Legend has it that a cow kicked over a lantern in the O'Leary barn and started the fire, but other theories hold that humans or even a comet may have been responsible for the event that left four square miles of the Windy City, including its business district, in ruins.
