Medicare Expert: EPOCH Senior Living on Blackstone Boulevard will welcome Medicare expert Alice Smith for “Medicare Basics: What you need to know,” a free presentation, on Wednesday, Oct. 17, at 12:30 p.m.  Smith will present a comprehensive review of what different Medicare plans are available, what each plan covers, what to consider when choosing coverage and how to apply for Medicare. She’ll also touch on some of the most recent Medicare changes. EPOCH Senior Living is located at 353 Blackstone Blvd. This event is free and open to the public. Candidates Forum: The League of Women Voters of Rhode Island announces its 2012 forums for East Providence candidates for State Representatives, East Providence City Council and School Board.  This forum, for candidates in Wards 3 & 4 and Districts 63, 65 and 66, will be held Wednesday at the Riverside Congregational Church at 15 Oak Avenue in Riverside from 6 to 8 p.m.

5K Road Race: The East Providence Firefighters’ seventh annual Freaky 5k Road Race is set for Sunday morning, October 21st, at 10 a.m. on and around the streets of the department’s Station No. 3 in the Rumford section of the city. Entry fee is $22 the day of the race. Registration begins at 9 a.m. Sunday. This Day in History: On this day in 1931, gangster Al Capone is sentenced to 11 years in prison for tax evasion and fined $80,000, signaling the downfall of one of the most notorious criminals of the 1920s and 1930s.
