Sister Hortense D. Amaral, 87: EP Native, Principal, Teacher

Sister Hortense D. Amaral, 87, a Sister of Saint Dorothy, passed away on Monday Dec. 2, 2013 at Grace Barker Nursing Home, according to Perry-McStay Funeral Home.

Born in East Providence, she was a daughter of the late Antonio Amaral Pereira and Hortencia (George) Amaral. She entered the Sisters of Saint Dorothy on February 19, 1944 and professed her final vows on September 8, 1954. Sister Hortense was a Teacher, Principal and Religious Education Coordinator. She had assignments in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Michigan and New York. Sister also served at Saint Elizabeth’s Parish in Bristol in several different parish ministries.

In addition to her religious community, the Sisters of Saint Dorothy, she leaves one sister, Sylvia Travers of Somerset and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Mary, Angelina, Anthony, Joseph, Manuel, George, August, James, John and William.

Her funeral will be held on Friday at 7:45 AM from the Perry McStay Funeral Home, 2555 Pawtucket Ave., East Providence with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. in Saint Elizabeth’s Church, Wood Street, Bristol. Burial will be in Saint Mary’s Cemetery, Bristol. Calling hours are today, Thursday, 3-6.
