Letter: One-Way Ordinance is One-Sided

This letter was submitted by city council candidate Candy Seel.

At last night's , a public hearing was held on an ordinance to make Oakley Street one-way (with a separate ordinance about parking introduced later in the docket).

When this one-way ordinance was introduced last month, Mayor Rogers cited alleged concerns from residents about traffic on Oakley Street that he supposedly heard while walking the neighborhoods in his ward. The mayor claimed that he supported this ordinance because it would be for the public good.

Last night, during a very lengthy discussion, it was brought to light that this ordinance actually came about as a result of a private meeting and was for the benefit of one business owner who was seeking additional parking for his nearby restaurant/banquet facility, and not for the public good at all.

Despite a petition signed by a number of local residents in opposition to the scheme, despite only a lukewarm endorsement by the Police Chief and a neutral response from the Fire Chief, and despite a lack of a factual report from planning or zoning officials, the mayor and Assistant Mayor Thomas Rose were adamant that this ordinance be passed.

Councilwoman Kleyla made a surprisingly impassioned argument that the residents in this area not be made to suffer because this one business owner might need additional parking in the future. After lengthy discussion, the vote on the ordinance was deferred.

If one business owner needs some special consideration for the economic development of his business, I don't begrudge him that. Let's work with him, find the best solution for him and his neighbors. But let's not pretend that it's for the public good, when it's obviously not.

We are in desperate need of transparency in our city governance. Primary election day is less than three weeks away. There's a fight for the Council seat in Ward 2. Rumor has it that Daniel Dalton has dropped out of the race in Ward 3, leaving only incumbent Tommy Rose and me as active candidates, but it's no less hotly-contested than it was.

Voters, come out for the primary. Make a statement right now that we've had it with business as usual in this city. Let's make it loud and clear that East Providence is heading in the right direction at long last.

Ms. Seel, I was also at that meeting and I coulnd't believe what I was hearing. Rogers AND Rose painted a wonderful picture about the "public good" and then in a moments time, the truth came out. I'm sure it's a buddy of theirs that needs the extra parking for his business and I'm sure that will be another "back room" deal if this thing doesn't get squashed. This is the exact type of thing that needs to STOP. Every business in this city is hurting and with deals like that going on they will continue to suffer along with the residents of this city. Ms. Seel, I don't live in your ward but I sure wish I did! You are definately the person for the job and I hope the people in ward 3 see that and vote for you. Thank you for working for the people of this city - we need more like you. Best of luck in the primary!

1 more thing Ms. Seel, do you know why they left out the name of the Maderia Resturaunt on the docket?
missed it August 23, 2012 at 12:49 AM
Is Maderia the business that you all are talking about?
JC August 23, 2012 at 01:53 AM
Yes, Madeira was mentioned last night

My apoligies, I did hear Rogers or Rose say the name. I thought it was Kleyla that said it.

That is the same restaurant that both Rogers and Rose had their fundraisers at...Hmmm
Candy Seel August 23, 2012 at 01:04 PM
That was the restaurant. It wasn't mentioned on the docket because this whole thing was supposed to be for the "public good", and the facts didn't come out until Mr. Conley started digging deeper. Congratulations to local resident/property owner Mr. Furtado who started the petition and helped bring this situation into the light of day.

What would you do Ms Seel after you consulted with Damiani and Coogan. That's right everyone knows they put you up against Rose and Cunha against Rogers because they don't associate with him. Vote Seel and Cunha and you get Ccogan and Damiani. And also the post that say Coogan is still with Rose and Rogers is fat boy himself Coogan. I sure don't want that.
Candy Seel August 23, 2012 at 02:09 PM
Mr. Jimmy Jones--I can't let this one go by unanswered. I don't know what "everyone knows," but I can tell you this (and I must say it in capital letters): NO ONE PUT ME UP TO THIS. NO ONE OWNS ME. THERE ARE NO STRINGS ATTACHED TO ME. I've spoken generally with Mr. and Mrs. Damiani at various fundraising events, as I've spoken with many other people. I rarely spoke with Mr. Coogan, and I certainly haven't talked with him since he bluntly denied knowing me after one of his menacing associates confronted me at a City Council meeting. I know politics can be a rough game and, if you put yourself forward, people are going to rough you up. But your accusations are untrue and offensive and unacceptable.

Politicians are politicians. They always have been and always will be. Anyone who claims otherwise should get out of the race.

Is this any surprise that rogers and rose would try to pull something off like this...it's just another example of why we need to send them packing. Residents of East Providence...please do your homework. This city needs change now. Take a good hard look at who is associated with who...it's easy to see who is attending who's fundraisers, who campaigns together...there is no doubt that you have the rogers, rose, rossi, dasilva, faction...there are others as well...but this is the faction that would continue to do more damage to the city than has already been done. Special interests need to go!

Kudos Ms. Seel! I can't wait to see their comments when you take office and they find out you ARE NOT who they think! What a great moment in time that will be!
SL August 23, 2012 at 06:40 PM
How come no one speaks of the so called honest guys..... Conley and Digioia...they care so much;Conley is going to the state house and Digioia is probably going with him in some capacity. Give me a break and by the way Bruce Z you have so many opinions why haven't you considered running oh but than you would have to be accountable, better to be the Monday morning quarterback. Ms. Seel very disappointing to know you are associating with those folks.

Fat boy coogan could not even shine MS Seel's shoes. She is too smart to get involved with a looser like him. He doen't even come to town because eveyone in EP is sick of him and his fat bald sidekick! Dumb and dumber don't even go to the meeting anymore because they were about to get arrested for all of their tougery in the back of the room! Finally got rid of some of the trash. Good Luck Ms Steel

Arthur Dolloff August 24, 2012 at 03:43 PM
Is that the resturant owned by Izzy Lillard's sister?
Arthur Dolloff August 24, 2012 at 03:46 PM
Sounds like more of the same special interest group keeping their fingers on the trigger, god help the little people in this city, Candy seems to not care for them....
Arthur Dolloff August 24, 2012 at 03:48 PM
No suprise Bruce, just bad timimg just before the election. Seems they can not control themselves very long before the clown hats come out.....
Candy Seel August 24, 2012 at 04:34 PM
Hello, Mr. Dolloff--You commented above: "[G]od help the little people in this city, Candy seems to not care for them...." If by "little people" you mean the taxpayers, residents, homeowners, businesspeople, elderly and schoolchildren in our community, then you couldn't be any further from the truth. These are the people I care most about and hope to represent on the Council. On the other hand, if by "little people" you mean the small-minded special interests who currently control or would like to control our city, then you're right. I don't care for them at all. I understand why people are skeptical when a candidate tells the honest truth. We're all so jaded by now with politicians and lies that when someone honest comes along we can't believe it. It's your right and everyone else's to believe what you wish. Just know that what I say, I mean, and that won't change, win or lose. Thanks for your time.
