4 Nabbed After Ransacking Cars

Three 18-year-old men and a 17-year-old boy were arrested last week for breaking into a host of cars in East Providence.

Three 18-year-old men and a 17-year-old boy were picked up by East Providence police early last Thursday morning, June 20, after allegedly ransacking a host of cars. 

The 18-year-olds are Raphael F. Lopes, of 439 Tremont St., Rehoboth; Jonathan A. Ortiz Jr., of 80 Evergreen Drive, East Providence; and Matthew M. Masse, of 411 Glenwood Ave., Pawtucket. The juvenile also is from Rehoboth. 

The quartet allegedly spent the night breaking into vehicles and stealing whatever they could find. They were nabbed at a gas pump at the Shell Service Station on Pawtucket Avenue at about 3:20 am when a police officer identified the car in which they were traveling.

The make and model of the car was reported to police by the owner of one of the vehicles entered. The woman also identified the suspects because they were all wearing white shirts, according to the arrest report. 

Police found a car full of the items stolen from the vehicles in East Providence, including a backpack, golf balls, a BB gun, sunglasses, an iPod, flashlights, pocket knives, GPS units, a Rolex watch, and plenty of coins. The coins were run through a coin-counting machine at a local grocery store, police said.

The three 18-year-olds were given summonses to appear in 6th District Court on July 25. The juvenile was turned over to his parents. He was driving his mother’s car, police said.
