'Agitated' Woman, 31, Charged by Police

East Providence police charge woman with disorderly conduct after verbal, physical confrontation with mother, sister, patrol officer.

An extremely “agitated” East Providence woman, 31, was charged by police with disorderly conduct early last Friday morning, June 28.

East Providence police said a patrol officer’s response at around 12:30 am to a report about a woman yelling obscenities on Lincoln Avenue found Darlene J. Melo, of 16 Lincoln Ave., doing just that. She allegedly was yelling at her mother and sister from across the street in her vehicle, police said.

The incident apparently started with a verbal confrontation earlier that evening between the three women. It reportedly escalated into Melo storming out of the house but continuing to berate her sister and mother.

A patrol officer’s presence also did not seem to calm down the woman, according to the police report. When she attempted to cross the street allegedly to confront her sister again, according to the police report, the patrol officer stepped in front of Melo. She began fighting with him at that point.

The only way to seemingly calm her down was to handcuff her, according to the arrest report.
