Changes Planned for Grist Mill Intersection

A project set to begin in 2014 is expected to make the notorious intersection safer.

The intersection next to the site of that led to the destruction of the is expected to get a facelift for safety, WPRI in Providence reported. The $2.8 million project, which will include the installation of a traffic light and the alteration of the intersection from a y-shape to a t-shape, is expected to start in 2014.

WPRI reported:

For years, residents have complained about the hazard of where Fall River Avenue, Arcade Avenue and Mill Road intersect. There have been between 30 and 40 car accidents at that corner [every year] ...

"It's crazy. If you watch for any period of time, you will see nobody really knows what direction to go in or who has the right of way. And that's really, I guess, the problem," said Greg Esmay, owner of the Old Grist Mill Tavern.

The project will be funded with state and federal money.

WILL THEY GIVE ME THE 2.8 MILLION IF I SOLVE THE PROBLEM WITH ONE EASY MOVE? MAKE ARCADE AVENUE FROM THE INTERSECTION ALL THE WAY TO 44 ONE WAY. NORTH. THAT WAY THERE IS NO INTERSECTING TRAFFIC TRYING TO CUT ACROSS 114. PEOPLE WHO WANT TO GO SOUTH TOWARDS ROUTE 6 WILL HAVE TO USE 114 SOUTH FROM 44 IN FRONT OF TASCA INSTEAD OF TRYING TO MERGE SOUTHBOUND IN FRONT OF THE GRIST MILL.

Joe: How would this affect public safety? Would police and fire have to travel past Arcade and take the left at Tasca? Or would they be expected to fly down Chestnut to Hammond to Olny etc. to reach homes and businesses in the south? Or would they simply be exempt from going one way on Arcade. Just curious.

This proposed fix will only be a traffic problem. Traffic will be backed up every afternoon. What we need is a rotary put in place.

A rotary??? And whose land is going to be taken for that?

Jim2469: I suggested this when I was on the Board of Selectmen. There were two objections. Local traffic and the fire department, which uses Arcade as the fastest way to get to Luther's Corners and south Seekonk. I personally always go Taunton Ave. to Fall River Ave. and return coming north on Arcade. It's the safest way of navigating a dangerous intersection.
