Fire Department Chaplain Leaves for Michigan

Campbell Lovett, minister of The Newman Congregational Church, accepted a position in Lansing. He was the fire department chaplain for 11 years.

The Rev. Campbell Lovett, minister of and fire chaplain for the East Providence Fire Department, has begun a new journey in Michigan.

According to Fire Captain Oscar Elmasian, the minister has accepted a new position in Lansing after serving in East Providence for 16 years. Sharon Kay is listed as the associate minister on the church's website.

In addition to providing spiritual aid to members of his church, he also assisted the fire department in times of need, said Captain Elmasian. He would help counsel firefighters after an especially trying emergency situation or respond to the scene of an accident.

"[The chaplain] was a phenomenal support system," he said, adding he helped the firefighters deal with the Sept. 11 attacks. "[Firefighting] is our job, but as human beings it affects us for many years to come. Campbell was one of those guys he could ease the pain, assist us in dealing with it."

He worked with the department for 11 years. He has a wife named Eileen and two sons.
