The brush fire that ignited the Forbes Street Landfill this weekend was never in danger of harming residential property, said East Providence Fire Chief Joseph Klucznik.
"It would have been nice to let it burn out...But the smoke was carrying toward the residential area," said the chief.
According to reports from WPRI, firefighters were still on the scene trying to extinguish the fire into Saturday night.
The East Providence Fire Department used front end loaders to extinguish the fire as the refuse was burried deep in the ground, said the chief.
"It would have burned for days," he said, noting a battalion chief made the decision to extinguish the blaze.
Director of Public Works Steve Coutu was notified of the fire.
