Man, 44, Faces Domestic Charges

A Rutland Street man reportedly pushed and struck his wife after a night of drinking, according to East Providence police.

An East Providence man, 44, faces domestic simple assault and domestic disorderly conduct charges after he reportedly hit his wife.

Joao M. Chaves, of 15 Rutland St., allegedly struck his wife last Friday morning, Nov. 2, after an alleged night of drinking and using drugs, East Providence police report.

The arrest report indicates that Chaves pushed his wife and hit her in the head near her ear at about 7:30 am. The alleged assault was reported by Chaves’s son, who apparently saw him strike her.

Police found a broken picture frame, a smashed mug, a broken glass sugar bowl and a television remote on the floor when they arrived, according to the arrest report.

Chaves was described by police as intoxicated. His wife said the incident started when he asked her for money and she refused because she feared he would use it to purchase drugs, according to the arrest report.

Chaves was taken to the police station and arraigned. He was given a date to appear in court.
