Man Charged With Slashing E.P. Woman 3 Times With Knife

Providence man allegedly returned to woman's apartment after an earlier assault by him on her that she reportedly thwarted by stabbing him in the knee and hand.

East Providence police arrested a Providence man last Wednesday afternoon, July 17, with stabbing his East Providence girlfriend three times in the legs.

Michael W. Stewart, 49, of 26 Pembroke Ave., allegedly stabbed the woman, 44, about 4:20 pm after he returned to her 10th Street home, East Providence police said. They had a romantic relationship, police said.

They had apparently argued earlier in the day and she used a kitchen knife to stab him in the knee and hand after he punched her in the head and kicked her while she was sprawled on the floor, according to the arrest report.

Stewart left the woman’s apartment after he was stabbed, police said. But he came back and reportedly yelled at least twice that he was going to "kill the bitch," according to two witness statements in the arrest report.

Stewart allegedly cut the woman three times with a knife before he was scared off by witnesses to the attack in the front hallway of her apartment building. He fled in a blue Toyota Celica that was pulled over by police in the parking lot for Riverside Optical on Bullocks Point Avenue.

Police arrested Stewart at gunpoint because he was still armed with the knife. Blood was found all over the interior of his vehicle.

Stewart and the woman were treated by East Providence EMTS before being taken to Rhode Island Hospital for additional treatment. She reportedly had severe lacerations. Both were released with bandaged wounds. He was taken back to the police station and jailed overnight.

Stewart was arraigned on Thursday morning, July 18, in 6th District Court on charges of domestic assault with a deadly weapon, a knife, and domestic breaking and entering. She was not charged.
