Man's Halloween Assault Violates No Contact Order

East Providence Police report they arrested a City man at 6:23 p.m. Oct. 31 after he assaulted his ex-girlfriend's boyfriend during an argument about seeing his daughter on Halloween, violating a no-contact order.

Officers were called to 156 Wilmarth Ave., by the EP Fire Department for a possible assault that night, according to police reports. When they arrived, officers spoke with John Cabral, 26, of 156 Wilmarth Ave., whose left eye was shut and swollen black and blue. He told officers he'd been struck in the face by his ex-girlfriend's boyfriend.

Shortly after, Cabral was transported by EP rescue to Rhode Island Hospital.

Officer Charles Walkup reported he spoke with several people, finally talking with William Thomas, 48, the ex-girlfriend's father, who said Cabral had approached his daughter and her boyfriend, demanding to see his infant daughter, saying, "Who do you think you are not letting me see my daughter on Halloween?" then swung at his girlfriend's boyfriend, hitting him in the face.

The boyfriend responded by swinging back, and a few blows were exchanged before Thomas broke them apart, he said, according to Walkup's report. The boyfriend was not visibly injured, Walkup reported.

Walkup found Cabral had an active no-contact order against him for his daughter's mother. He arrested Cabral, charging him with assault and violating the no-contact order.
