Navy Man Identified as Pedestrian Hit on Route 195 in E.P.

The serviceman from Florida is one of three men killed in the past week on local highways, including an East Providence man, 26.

Rhode Island State Police have identified the pedestrian killed while walking on Interstate 195 in East Providence early last Sunday morning, Sept. 15, as a serviceman from Florida.

Carlos Rodriguez, 22, was hit and killed instantly in the eastbound high-speed lane on the Washington Bridge. He served in the Navy aboard a submarine, the USS New Hampshire, based in Groton, Conn.

State Police said Rodriguez was out with friends on Saturday night in the Providence area and got separated from them. He began walking along the highway and was struck about 4 am.

Rodriguez is one of three men hit and killed on local interstate highways in the past week, including an East Providence man.

Terrance Iovino, 26, was struck on Sept. 12 around 9:45 pm as he ran across Route 95 near the merge with Route 146. He died the next day.

State Police said they found a can of spray paint with him. Investigators speculated that he might have been looking to "tag" something with graffiti.
