Police Chief on 'Administrative Leave'

WPRI.com reported Wednesday that Chief Joseph Tavaras has been placed on leave for undisclosed reasons.

Reached by phone this morning, City Manager Peter Graczykowski said officials "are trying to move things expediently" in handling the "personnel matter" that led to the decision to put Chief Tavares on leave.

Maj. Christoper Parella has been named Acting Police Chief "until further notice," Graczykowski added.

East Bay Newspapers reported this week that Tavares surrendered his city-issued cell phone and other equipment at the end of business on Monday.

East Providence Police Chief Joseph Tavares has been 'placed on administrative leave,' according to a report on WPRI.com posted Wednesday, Apr. 17.

City Manager Peter Graczykowski did not comment, other than to say that Tavares's leave is a 'personnel matter,' the television station reported.
