Registration for Firefighters' Test Starts Aug. 11; City Seeking 12

East Providence wants to hire a dozen probationary firefighters by the spring of next year.

Do you want to be an East Providence firefighter?

The city is looking to hire 12 probationary firefighters early next year. The first step is to take the Firefighter Physical Performance Test offered by the RI Association of Fire Chiefs.

Registration for that test starts tomorrow, Aug. 11, and runs through Sept. 13. Go to the fire chiefs’ website www.rifirechiefs.com for more information about class dates. Certification is required by the end of October.

Applicants also must take a written test, go through a face-to-face interview, and have a background check completed before being hired. Then comes the three-month fire training school.

Women and minority candidates are encouraged to apply. All new firefighters are expected to be hired by around Jan. 1 with deployment in the city by the spring. The dozen new firefighters would bring staffing up to almost full employment at least until the next group of firefighters retires.
