Councilors Introduce Parking Changes

Taunton Avenue would get a small 6-hour parking zone under ordinances introduced by the East Providence City Council.

The East Providence City Council introduced new ordinances at its meeting Tuesday night, Feb. 19, that create two small 6-hour and 2-hour parking zones on Taunton Avenue.

The 6-hour parking zone would run from John Street to Russell Avenue on the north side of Taunton Avenue. The 2-hour zone would run from Russell Avenue to Broadway on the south side of Taunton.

Those parking areas are currently 2-hour and 30-minute parking zones.

The rest of Taunton Avenue between Walnut Street and Broadway would remain 2-hour parking.

Merchants in the two proposed parking zones requested the changes primarily because they are forced to move their own vehicles often during the day with 2-hour parking.

Taunton Avenue has 2-hour parking primarily because of concerns that commuters would use the street to park their vehicles while taking RIPTA busses into Providence.
