War of Words Over Police Chief Escalates

Police chief's attorney, Thomas McAndrew, accuses East Providence city manager with making misstatements and inferences to undermine Joseph Tavares.

A war of words seems to have been launched between East Providence’s city manager and the attorney representing the police chief.

Attorney Thomas McAndrew fired back on Wednesday afternoon, July 17, at Peter Graczykowski 's statement on Tuesday that chided the attorney for starting a “smear campaign” on behalf of Joseph Tavares.

McAndrew suggested on July 15 that the city manager and the two city councilors who are accused of collaborating to fire the police chief for alleged personnel deficiencies that don’t exist take lie detector tests to determine who is telling the truth.

Graczykowski had responded a day later with a prepared statement. McAndrew fired off a prepared statement of his own that said the city manager is using public comments, misstatements and inferences to undermine the police chief.
