Money donated for sports at Martin and Riverside middle schools will now be disbursed separately from other school aid in East Providence.

Do you want to make a donation to support middle school sports in East Providence?

You can be assured now that your gift will go entirely to the teams from Martin and Riverside middle schools.

The City Council unanimously approved on Tuesday night, Sept. 17, an ordinance that sets up a separate trust account for middle school sports.

The city finance director will give out the money with the presentation of a voucher from the superintendent of schools. The trust account also will not be considered part of the “maintenance of effort” by East Providence when Rhode Island determines the amount of the city’s state aid, said Finance Director Malcolm Moore.

Two local organizations raise funds to support middle school sports, funding for which the former East Providence Budget Commission eliminated. The organizations, which were launched at each middle school, pool their funding, which will now sit in this new trust account.
