Sweet Tooth Bakery Creating Kids' Customized Cupcakes

The Sweet Tooth Bakery on 99A Taunton Ave., offers a tasty take on school fundraisers, donating 10 percent of the proceeds from student-designed cupcakes.

The bake shop, which opened in June across the street from Sacred Heart Church, down the road from City Hall, is piloting the effort with Nathan Bishop Middle School in Providence.

Students from each grade at the school compete in-house to come up with their best cupcake designs, with the school's guidance counselors choosing one from each grade according to which ones show the most school spirit. The winners make the cut for shelf space at Sweet Tooth, said Lisa Bazzle, co-owner of the shop.

Once the cupcakes are made reality at Sweet Tooth, 10 percent of the sales go back to the school, she said.

Three NBMS cupcake designs wait hungry customers at the shop:

NBMS Chocolate Mania (grade 6) - A blue icing-topped chocolate cupcake with snow cap candies with chunks of chocolate baked inside.

NBMS Thriller (grade 8) - A blue icing-topped chocolate cupcake with orange sprinkles that represents the school anti-bullying policy.

NBMS Surprise (grade 7) - A white butter cream icing-topped blueberry cupcake with blue sprinkles and raspberry filling.

Bazzle said the students came up with some great-tasting ideas. "It's so good," she said.

The shop is working with Sacred Heart School to put out a line of student-designed cupcakes as well, Bazzle said. The NBMS cupcakes will be on sale through the end of January.
