The Rumford Diner Offers Upscale Breakfast, Lunch Menu

The Rumford, East Providence's new upscale diner, tucked in the back of a small plaza at 446 N. Broadway, opened Sept. 23 offering an upscale diner experience.

On Friday morning, business seemed steady, with a modest crowd and traffic in the eatery, also home to Clockwork Deli & Catering, as well as the offices of The Deaton Law Firm, all owned by John Deaton.

Deaton, who worked his way way through school and his law studies as a waiter for 17 years, acquired Clockwork Deli about a year ago, and seized the opportunity to start his own restaurant, going with a diner because, "I just like diners," Deaton said.

The Rumford is not your average diner, evidenced by the Rumford Recommended: Two slices of French Toast battered, grilled cinnamon coffee cake, served with cinnamon apples. The dish, not your average diner fare, is a customer favorite, said Vincent Rampone, the diner's manager. "We try to be different," Rampone said.

The eatery has received good reviews on Yelp, as well as one from City Councilor Tracy Ann Capobianco, who welcomed the restaurant on behalf of the City during their Nov. 19 meeting. "It's affordable and the food is delicious," she said.
