New-Look Summer Camp Opens

Summer camp opened in East Providence on Monday, July 8, at Pierce Field.

The new-look summer camp in East Providence opened today, July 8, at Pierce Field for its 6-week run.

Approximately 150 kids ages 6-15 have signed up for the camp, said Diane Sullivan, recreation department coordinator. This year for the first time the camp will include experiential learning as well as the traditional camp activities, such as nok hockey, swimming, arts and crafts, bowling and field trips.

The experiential learning is being provided through the Hasbro Summer Learning Initiative -- an attempt to offset the 3-month loss of learning many children face each summer by including educational activities designed by teachers side by side with camp recreation leaders and the campers.

A cooling breeze helped out a lot on the first day of camp, which took place under sunny skies but in 90-degree temperatures. Many of the campers seemed content to huddle at tables in the shade. But the basketball courts were busy and a dozen or so boys were playing soccer.

The summer camp runs 7 hours a day through Aug. 16. There is a $50 a week fee per child. That fee includes a breakfast and lunch provided by the YMCA and swimming lessons. You can still sign up at Pierce Field.
