Here's What's Happening This Weekend

Here are some things to do in and around East Providence this weekend, Sept. 20-22. 

The RI Coalition for the Homeless hosts its 12th annual “Rally4Recovery” festival at Roger Williams National Memorial, 282 North Main St., Providence, on Saturday afternoon. It’s a free, family-friendly festival that is designed to help build a culture of recovery in Rhode Island based on the belief that everyone is capable of recovering from addiction to drugs, alcohol and mental illness. There will be activities for kids, tables with educational information about treatment, community supports, a signup table for “Obamacare,” which starts October 1, and entertainment provided by the Drums of Freedom, The Senders, and the Dumpstaphunk Band. At the end of the rally, there will be a luminaria procession to Memorial Park. The event starts at 2 pm. 

The Barrington Farmers Market continues on Saturday from 9 am to noon at Barrington Congregational Church on County Road. There are always new vendors on hand with seasonal produce, breads, pastries, meats and other home-grown goods. Among the usual vendors are New Urban Farmers in Pawtucket, Aquidneck Honey in Middletown, Providence Coffee Roasters in Providence, Nettie's Kettle Corn in North Providence, Oakdale Farm in Rehoboth, and Seven Stars Bakery in Providence and East Providence.  

The Museum of Natural History and Planetarium takes a bird walk through Roger Williams Park in Providence on Saturday morning starting at 9 am. It is probable that you will see may see migrating hawks and warblers along with sandpipers, kingfishers, mergansers, and bufflehead in the park's lakes and ponds. You may even spot deer, fisher, and turkeys. Pre-registration is required. There is a $3 per person fee if you are not a museum member; it includes museum admission. Sorry, no child under age 4 is permitted. And no pets please

Save the Bay holds its annual “Beach Slam” at Goddard State Park in Warwick on Sunday, Sept. 22. You can enjoy a day of free beach activities, with local kayak vendors doing kayak, canoe, and paddle board demos. This family-fun event at the beach also includes live entertainment, great food, rock climbing, a bouncy house, and more. It runs from noon to 5 pm.
