Jaunt to a Haunt Near East Providence This Weekend

The Halloween countdown's running, with the chill in the air catching a little more bite as haunting attractions' scare tactics reach their respective pinnacles.

About seven miles across the border in Rehoboth, MA, you can check out Unpleasant Acres, at 187 Pleasant St., where a normally sedate 22-acre Christmas tree farm has been transformed into a scary landscape featuring
a 20-minute haunted hayride with ghosts and goblins. After, guests are directed into the Unpleasant Manor for a maze that will frighten "event the strongest of men."

The attraction runs Friday and Saturday nights (7-10 p.m.) from the end of September through the weekend before Halloween.

In Seekonk, MA, you can visit Fear Town in the woods at Seekonk Speedway, and take a journey in and out of run-down buildings hidden for decades, with monsters coming at you from all angles. Admission is $12 and a brave hear. Call 508-296-9661.

Nearby in Cranston, two spots offer scares: long-time spooksters at Confreda Garden's Scary Acres on 2150 Scituate Ave., Hope (West Cranston), and RI newcomers, the scaretacular Spookyworld, at Mulligan's Island, 1000 New London Ave, Cranston.

"It will be a great time," said Michael Accomando of Spooky World, "If you like to cry."

Attractions include: Festival of Fear, a 3-D adventure with artwork and freakish creatures; Devils Playground, a walk under the stars turns very dark as you stumble upon a cemetery and its undead inhabitants; Darkness Falls, find your way through a house of darkness with nothing more then a glowstick. General Admission tickets are $29.99. (On opening weekend starting Friday, buy one, get one free).

At Scary Acres, long-time patrons will no doubt recall the chainsaw guy, or the butcher, but they'd do well to avoid thinking they've seen it all. "You don’t know what to expect, it will always be different each year—that’s part of what makes it good and scary,” noted a manager on the attraction's website.

Tickets are $20 Per Person, with a speed pass for $30 per person allowing you to skip the line.

A bit further north, in Cumberland, Haunted Hill boasts the scariest rated trail in southern New England. The trail features "killer scarecrows to movie killers you have feared since your childhood, they are all loose in the middle of our woods and they’re out for blood," according to their website.

Tickets are $15 Per Person, with a speed pass for $20 Per Person allowing you to skip the line.
