Lunar Eclipse, Full Moon Arrive Tonight

A penumbral lunar eclipse will coincide with a full, or hunter's, moon on Friday, Oct. 18, 2013. Here's a look at what viewing conditions will be like in town.

The night sky will be illuminated by a full moon on Fri., Oct. 18, but it’s not just any full moon.

Friday’s moon will be partially blocked by the earth’s shadow, causing a penumbral lunar eclipse, according to Space.com.

While just a partial eclipse, the appearance of the earth’s shadow on the surface of the moon will be visible to the naked eye, Space.com reports.

Additionally, clouds in the sky today are expected to dissipate as night draws near, creating mostly clear conditions for moon viewing.

Friday’s moon is also called a Hunter’s Moon, as it is the first full moon after the Harvest Moon.

The partial eclipse will reach its deepest point, according to Space.com, at about 7:50 p.m.
