The Rhode Island Philharmonic, located directly across the street from the East Providence Police Station, is the only fully integrated professional orchestra and music school in the United States. Founded by Francis Madeira, who retired in 1978, the Philharmonic serves approximately 14,500 children, youth and adults with lessons, classes, ensembles and community engagement programs. It is also home to the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra, currently under the leadership of Music Director Larry Rachleff and Resident Conductor Francisco Noya. The orchestra comprises 73 professional musicians, an administrative staff, a board of directors and a board of overseers. The Philharmonic's goal is to encourage involvement with music by offering outstanding and accessible symphonic performances and by providing a high-quality, comprehensive music education.
