POLL: Does RI Need a Legal Place to Drag Race?

An online petition has received more than 1,000 signatures from residents throughout New England who would like to see a legal drag strip built in Rhode Island.

Rhode Island drag racing enthusiasts are petitioning for the State Senate to designate an area of land for a legal drag strip. An online petition on Change.org  has gained a quick following this month, with supporters pushing for the state to allow a private investor to build the designated space. According to Providence resident Joshua Upham, who started the petition, our state has been the home of "many accidents (sometimes fatal) of illegal street racers." "These 'Street Races' are dangerous, Illegal, and a nuisance to the citizen's of Rhode Island," he writes in the petition. Consequently, he wants to "persuade the State of Rhode Island to set aside a slot of land to build a drag racing strip where legal drag-racing can occur." …

This idea has been kicked around for decades. Besides Epping, NH, another spot that was mentioned during the early 70's was the Quonset Airstrip. When the Navy pulled out, that air field was abandoned. The strip was handed over to the state which promptly sat on it and did nothing. As a fan of racing, there should be a place remote enough for people to bring their rods for a race. The problem in …   more ›

East Providence Runners in Boston Marathon Today

It's Patriots Day in MA, and two city residents are running the 26.2 miles.

It's a particularly hot day to be running a Marathon, but that's how city residents Carol Crutchfield (#24020) and Terri Hamer (#22565) are spending this sunny Monday. There's a heat advisory issued for the area today, which is nice for sipping lemonade, but not so great if you're planning to run 26.2 miles in a marathon. "This will not be a day to run a personal best," according to the Boston Athletic Association's statement about the conditions. "If you choose to run, run safely above all else. Speed can kill,” they said. “Recognizing symptoms of heat illness in yourself and others is critical, this may include headaches, dizziness, confusion, fatigue, nausea and vomiting. If you experience any of these, stop running immediately and if …

K-Rob Rallies Community to Save His Hometown's Sports

The BMX professional urges East Providence residents to unite to save the city's middle school sports programs slated for elimination.

Kevin Robinson has been chosen as The Huffington Post's Greatest Person of the Day for March 7. You can read about past honorees here. Down at the Little Red Schoolhouse in East Providence, serious business was afoot last Wednesday. In the childcare center, residents brainstormed ways to save their middle school sports program, which is one of several proposed budget cuts in our waterfront community that's saddled with millions of dollars worth of reoccurring debt. Seated in plastic chairs suited for their pint-sized counterparts, the meeting's attendees were in no mood to play around.  "As with any battle, you want to start off strong," said Jonathan Pangborn, a local club soccer coach. Pangborn added that a united front should make a …

From St. Augustine, FL to San Diego, CA, in 46 days, Tiverton's Devin Beck reported that he moved "pretty quickly" across the country on his bicycle to help raise money for Haiti's plastics recycling problem.
