Hundreds of boys and girls of all ages across the East Bay will get hundreds of toys for Christmas thanks to a casual conversation at a tavern in East Providence. Alan Manchester, who owns and operates Oxford Tavern on Waterman Avenue, was talking to a customer who works at the East Bay Community Action Program (EBCAP) in Riverside. Fast forward a few weeks. Their chat has resulted in approximately 300 brand new, unwrapped toys being shipped to EBCAP last Tuesday, Dec. 4, by the woman whose chat with Manchester started the toy drive. The social service agency will be distributing those toys – and more to come – to the children in the towns served by EBCAP from East Providence to Newport. The second annual Soccer Shoot Out for boys and girls in the East Bay will take place on Saturday, Oct. 13, in Barrington to benefit the East Bay Coalition for the Homeless.
Who has the best soccer shot on goal in the East Bay? The second annual Soccer Shoot Out on Saturday, Oct. 13, could answer that question. It runs from 8 am to 2 pm at three fields in Barrington. The event benefits the East Bay Coalition for the Homeless. Boys and girls from U4 to U14 can register that day at one of the fields: Chianese Memorial Park, St. Andrews School or Middle Highway. The registration fee is $5. The competition will be by age group with awards for each group. All tie-breakers will be held the same day at 2 pm. Winners in each category will be awarded the trophies at a reception later in the month. More than 60,000 Rhode Islanders rely on food pantries to help meet their basic food needs.
The Rhode Island Community Food Bank would like to collect an additional 350,000 pounds of food between now and Dec. 30 during its annual Holiday Meal Drive. The Rhode Island Community Food Bank is the only food bank in the state of the Rhode Island. It provides food to 122 member emergency food pantries throughout the state, including the East Bay Community Action Program in East Providence.
