Police Chief on 'Administrative Leave'

WPRI.com reported Wednesday that Chief Joseph Tavaras has been placed on leave for undisclosed reasons.

  Update, Apr. 18, 11:25 am — Reached by phone this morning, City Manager Peter Graczykowski said officials "are trying to move things expediently" in handling the "personnel matter" that led to the decision to put Chief Tavares on leave. Maj. Christoper Parella has been named Acting Police Chief "until further notice," Graczykowski added. East Bay Newspapers reported this week that Tavares surrendered his city-issued cell phone and other equipment at the end of business on Monday. Taunton Man Charged with Assault at EP Restaurant

Ider DePina, 30, faces multiple charges after two victims told police that DePina assaulted them at the Coney Island Restaurant on March 30.

  East Providence Police reported the arrest of a Taunton, MA, man after two victims alleged that he assaulted them at the Coney Island Restaurant on Taunton Avenue on March 30 at about 3 am. Ider DePina, 30, faces two counts each of domestic assault; domestic disorderly conduct; and simple assault; plus an additional charge of disorderly conduct after police say he fled the restaurant after the alleged assaults. Ofc. Richard Cordeiro reported that he and other officers responded to a Code 1 alert at the restaurant at about 2:50 am. The two victims and witnesses gave officers a description of DePina, who had left the scene before officers arrived. Two Nabbed for Breaking into School

Police found the two local men inside Martin Middle School on March 24.

  Two East Providence men face breaking and entering charges after local officers found them inside Edward R. Martin Middle School on Sunday night, March 24, at about 8:30 pm. East Providence Police charged Kevin Machado, 22, of 13 Tenth St., and Junior Becker, 21, of 110 Warren Ave., with one count each of breaking and entering with felonious intent after officers responded to the middle school for an active alarm. Ofc. Steve Tiernan reported that when he arrived at the school, he found one of the doors "unsecured," and Ofc. Andrew Snow found the two men inside the building, attempting to get out by another exit. Martin Middle School Student Charged with Carrying BB Gun in School

East Providence Police reported the March 14 arrest of the juvenile.

  A student at Edward R. Martin Middle School faces a felony count of possession of a firearm on school grounds following his arrest by East Providence Police on March 14. Two other students told School Resource Officer Cheri Almeida-Neveu that they had seen the student take a BB pellet gun out of his backpack the afternoon before, and were worried that he may have brought the gun back to school on Thursday, according to police reports. Almeida-Nuveau and Principal Frank DeVall searched the student's backpack and found the weapon. Officers filed the weapons charge against the student and released him to his parents.

It is about the poor decision he made by choosing to take a weapon to school. It is about prevention,not waiting for the incident to occur. I so applaud those kids and their decision to tell authorities what they saw. This way the what If never happens. Mass. Women Arrested for Assault, Using Elevator as Bathroom

A Westford, MA, woman admitted that she had urinated in a hotel elevator, and a man at the hotel said he was slapped by a second woman, East Providence Police reported this week.

  East Providence Police arrested two women early Sunday morning after one of them admitted to urinating in an elevator at a local hotel, according to police reports. Kaitlyn Crowley, 22, of Westford, MA, faces a charge of disorderly conduct following her arrest. Officers also arrested a second woman, identified as Amy Ricco, 21, of Chelmsford, MA, on charges of disorderly conduct and simple assault after a man at the hotel told officers that Riccio had "slapped him in the face several times," Patrol Officer Sandra Bonvehi reported. After receiving a call about a disturbance at the Extended Stay America on Pawtucket Avenue at about 3:30 am on March 10, officers went to the hotel and spoke with an employee who said she had seen the two …

Men Charged With Copper Wire Theft

East Providence police have charged two Coventry men with stealing copper wire from cell phone towers; the men also face charges in Coventry and East Greenwich.

Police have charged two Coventry men with stealing copper wire from cell phone towers in East Providence -- part of $50,000 worth of copper wire stolen by them in Coventry, East Greenwich and East Providence. On Feb. 6, Coventry Police Officer Jadine Ferri observed a suspicious vehicle operating on Johnsons Boulevard in Coventry and made note of several large items in the rear of the vehicle. The vehicle then stopped in front of a residence at 90 Johnsons Boulevard. DUI Attorney Faces 2nd DUI

East Providence attorney Layne Savage, who specializes in drunk driving cases, is charged by police with a second DUI.

  An East Providence attorney who specializes in drunk driving cases has been charged for a second time with a DUI – this time in East Providence. Layne C. Savage will go to court tomorrow, Jan. 17, to face the DUI charge. Separate charges of refusing to submit to a chemical test, second offense; leaving the scene of an accident, and failure to maintain control of a motor vehicle will go before the RI Traffic Tribunal at a later date, according to East Providence police. She was charged by East Providence police on Sunday evening, Jan. 13, after her vehicle crashed into a parked vehicle at 512 Warren Ave. The crash pushed the other car into a pole; her vehicle stopped several hundred feet away. Drive-By Shooting on Summit Street

5 or 6 shots reportedly fired into a Summit Street home early Sunday morning, according to the East Providence police.

  A drive-by shooting was reported in East Providence early Sunday morning. No none was hurt. East Providence police reported that 5 or 6 bullets were fired into a single-family home at 134 Summit St. at about 2:30 am, according to the Providence Journal. None of the bullets appeared to have penetrated the interior of the house, according to Lt. Raymond Blinn. The shots reportedly came from a dark-colored vehicle, Blinn said. The house is near Cross Street in the City Hall neighborhood. Police had not released the name of the home’s owner or any other details as of mid-afternoon.

Man, 21, Busted for 'Pot' on His Lap

An East Providence man is spotted by a police officer with a marijuana cigarette on his lap outside a convenience store.

An East Providence man, 21, should probably have known better than to leave a marijuana cigarette sitting on his lap in plain view of a police officer. Thomas J. Raposo, of 65 Martello St., now faces a marijuana possession charge for the second time. Raposo was sitting in the driver’s seat of a Jeep Cherokee outside the Four Corners Market on Warren Avenue at around 8:40 pm last Tuesday. An East Providence police officer walked by and first noticed “blunt” shavings on the ground outside the driver’s door. A “blunt” is a cigar carved out for insertion of marijuana.  His curiosity was piqued, of course. We have kids hiding in school rooms, in the corners for 2 hrs, threats being made everyday and we are worrying about a "marijuana cigarette".
