Closing Oldham School: 'Only Move'

East Providence's interim superintendent, John DeGoes, tells the School Committee that closing Oldham Elementary School is the least disruptive, least costly, "the best move at this time, the only move."

“It’s the best move at this time, the only move. Any other move would be cost-prohibitive.” Interim East Providence Superintendent John DeGoes made that statement to the School Committee Thursday night in recommending the closure of Oldham School in Riverside – one of the oldest schools and the smallest elementary school in the city. All pupils at Oldham but new kindergarten kids and the staff would be moved to Waddington Elementary School in Riverside. Kindergarten pupils would attend the Meadowcrest School. DeGoes made that recommendation after being charged by the East Providence Budget Commission to trim the school budget by closing a school because of declining enrollment. The RI Department of Education also does not favor spending …

Thank you for your response. Certainly agree with getting rid of "spam" and any vulgarity. It was the comment about censorship had me a bit concerned. I believe in listening to all sides, even those with whom I don't agree. It is, after all, the American way. Thanks again for replying to my query.   more ›

So how does this affect the students that are at Waddinginton and Meadowcrest? Does this move mean more students in a single classroom? Are there enough classrooms to accomodate the influx of students? Has quality of education been accessed or just the cost savings?   more ›

Congratualations to all! I arrived right when they announced Bridden would be the new mayor and I must say that was a relief. It feels good to see mostly new faces up there. On the School side, I looked around the room and I saw only one (mr. Furtado--who I had hoped would win) past School committee member at the ceremony. This was a disappointment and speaks volumes of their character. Be …   more ›

All-New School Board Taking Over

The new members in all five seats of the East Providence School Committee bid adieu to the outgoing board on Tuesday night.

Out with the old and in with the new. That was the crux of the East Providence School Committee meeting Tuesday night, Nov. 13, in City Hall, according to the East Providence Post. Outgoing members – Charles Tsonos, Luisa Abatecola, Ryan Tellier, Stephen Furtado and Chrissy Rossi – gave some final thoughts on their two-year terms. Incoming members -- Joel Monteiro, Elizabeth Clupny, Anthony Ferreira, Richard Pimentel and Tim Conley -- introduced themselves. Tsonos, the School Committee chairman who stepped down to seek a legislative seat, said that watching what East Providence has endured over the past two years  “has not been pleasant to watch … but I certainly look forward to better days ahead,” according to the Post. Plenty to Pick From on Nov. 6 Ballot

Expect to spend some time filling out your ballot Tuesday: East Providence voters must select four city councilors, three school committee members, and three state legislators and vote on four local and seven state ballot questions along with a District 1

East Providence voters have plenty of local candidates to choose from in Tuesday's (Nov. 6) Presidential election. And four charter amendment questions as well. In short, expect to spend some time filling out your ballot. And you'll probably wait in line quite a bit longer, too. The local ballot questions include changing the charter to make the fiscal year correspond to the city's tax collection schedule; creating a budget reserve fund; consolidating and reorganizing departments, and, perhaps, the most controversial: establishing 4-year terms for the City Council and School Committee. Click here to see the ballot questions at the East Providence Canvassing Authority. The questions include explanations. Voters also must select between …

School Board Candidates Face Off

Candidates for Ward 2 and the At Large seats on the East Providence School Committee squared off Monday night in a League of Women Voters debate.

The East Providence School Committee candidates from Ward 2 and At Large squared off Monday evening, Oct. 15, at the Cape Verdean Progressive Center in the debate sponsored by the League of Women Voters RI. The candidates were last on the program, but what they were expected to say apparently convinced most of the 100 or so voters to stick around. Marie Hennedy, who served as moderator for the League of Women Voters, said she had never seen so many people for a debate of School Committee candidates in her many years of handling these types of public sessions. Anthony Ferreira and the only School Committee incumbent to seek re-election, Stephen Furtado, in Ward 2, and Joel Monteiro and Ronald Warr Jr., the At-Large candidates, sat side by …
