[VIDEO] Coventry Sweeps EP to Repeat as Champs

Coventry girls’ volleyball wins a second straight state championship thanks to efficient passing and a dominant front-line attack.

KINGSTON – After sweating through a tight first game, the Coventry Oakers easily took the next two against the East Providence Townies for a second straight girls’ volleyball state title Saturday evening at Keaney Gym at the University of Rhode Island. In contrast to the Division II match, the Oakers made quick work of the Townies after a 25-23 first game. After that tense game, Coventry swept the next two easily, 25-12 and 25-13. East Providence had no answer for Coventry attacking outside and middle hitters – junior Samantha Higgins, senior Marissa Turner, sophomore Jill Ward and junior Kelsey Ferrara. [VIDEO] Prout Upset by East Providence

The Townies will play Coventry for the girls’ volleyball state title on Saturday at Keaney Gym.

KINGSTON – Someone seemingly forgot to close the front door to Keaney Gym on Wednesday night, as the drafts from the nor’easter outside seemed to affect the teams inside. However, East Providence used slightly crisper passing and returning to take advantage of Prout errors, and upset the top seed from Division I-South in four sets: 23-25, 25-22, 25-16 and 25-22. Prout took the first game after building up a 10-1 lead. However, excluding a brief flurry in the fifth, it was the only time the Crusaders would look crisp against East Providence. The second game was marred by errors from both teams. At one point, with the score 16-15, only eight of the points had come from kills – the other 23 were from errors. On Sunday, Silva, an East Providence High School alum, hosted a football combine for youth at Crescent Park. Bruschi was watching a BMX demo.
