The state budget review commission has agreed to handle city personnel matters again.
At the request of Mayor James Briden, the state budget review commission has agreed to restore its oversight of city personnel matters, which the state group had handed back to the city in March. Reached by phone Thursday night, Briden said he requested the return of state control because "I believe it is in the best interest of the city." Briden declined to comment on whether his request had anything to do with City Manager City Manager Peter Graczykowski's decision to place Police Chief Joseph Tavares on administrative leave earlier this week. Mayor James Briden has drafted a resolution to amend the state law that requires East Providence to hire an administration and finance officer (AFO) to watch over spending.
The mayor is asking the city council to oppose the state-mandated hiring of an administration and finance officer (AFO) for East Providence. A resolution asking for their support in amending the state law that requires the hiring of an AFO when the East Providence Budget Commission leaves in about 10 days was placed on the docket at the last minute for the council’s meeting on Tuesday night. The councilors tabled the resolution, however, at the request of Mayor James Briden, who is on vacation until Thursday, said Assistant Mayor Thomas Rose. “He requested that it be deferred,” said Rose, who presided over Tuesday’s meeting. “I also don’t like to vote on big items without the full council.” The vote to table the resolution was 3-1. There will be a new face on the East Providence Budget Commission for its meeting on Thurday, Dec. 13. New East Providence Mayor James Briden will be replacing former mayor Bruce Rogers on the five-member board, which meets at 3 pm in City Hall. See a recent Patch interview with Briden. I'm undecided about the Mayor form of government. I still believe our current system will work. However, I also believe it should be seven with three at large. I also believe they should have staggered terms. As for residency requirements, they don't work and studies show you end up paying higher salaries to entice candidates to move.
