Joseph S. Kdan, of Broadview Road, East Providence, died Monday, May 20, 2013, at West View Health Care Center in West Warwick. He was 87. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Joseph and Lula M. (Case) Kdan. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a custodian for the East Providence School District for 23 years, and worked part-time as an operator of the Crescent Park Carousel for more than 50 years. Jaime R. Serpa, of East Providence died Friday, May 17, 2013. He was 81. He was the husband of Maria Serpa. Born in Faial, Azores, he was a son of the late Jaime and Maria Serpa. He served in the Portugal military for 20 years before immigrating to the U.S., where he became a jewelry mold maker. He was a member of New England Soccer Hall of Fame. Doris L. (Gomes) Fontes, of Sutton Avenue, East Providence, died Saturday, May 18, 2013 at her home. She was 84. She was the wife of the late Irving Fontes. Paul V. Robbins, of Wampanoag Trail, Barrington, and formerly of Riverside, East Providence, died peacefully on May 19, 2013. He was 85. He was the husband of the late Arleen F. (Felder) Robbins. Born in Fall River, Mass., he was a son of the late Al and Eva (Sinrich) Robbins. He lived in Barrington for the past six years and in Riverside for 42 years. He was a New England District Sales Manager for the Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. for 35 years and a member of the Boy Scouts of America for 20 years. There are no calling hours. Luiza Medeiros, formerly of Miles Avenue, East Providence, died Thursday, May 16, 2013. She was 97. She was the wife of the late Manuel P. Medeiros. Born Aug. 26, 1915, in Sao Miguel, Azores, she was a daughter of the late Manuel Rocha Amaral and Maria Rosa Cabral. Medeiros leaves numerous survivors, including 10 children, 43 grandchildren, 82 great-grandchildren and 18 great-great grandchildren. Her funeral will begin today at 7:45 am from the Rebello Funeral Home, 901 Broadway, East Providence, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 am in Our Lady of the Rosary Church, Traverse St., Providence. Carol A. Christman, of Port Charlotte, Fla., formerly of East Providence, died on Tuesday, May 14, 2013 at her home. She was 75. She was the wife of the late Gerald H. Christman Sr. and the late Paul E. Coleman. She was born in Providence, a daughter of the late George H. and Margaret (Humphrey) Belfield. A Registered Nurse, she worked for St. Joseph's Hospital for 26 years before retiring in 1989 as director of St. Joseph Ambulatory Care Center. After moving to Florida, she worked for 20 years in health care before retiring in 2010. Irene (Costa) Bettencourt, formerly of Vincent Avenue, East Providence, died surrounded by her family, on Monday, May 13, 2013. She was 88. She was the wife of the late Stephen "Harry" Bettencourt. She and her husband owned the Wampanoag Diner in East Providence from 1954 to 2000. Born Dec. 30, 1924, in Seekonk, she was a daughter of the late George and Mary (Almeida) Costa. Relatives and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial Friday at 9 am in St. Martha's Church, 2595 Pawtucket Ave., East Providence. There will be no calling hours. Libby Robinson, of East Providence, died suddenly on May 13, 2013, at Rhode Island Hospital in the Jane Brown Unit after a short illness. She was 81. Born in Providence, she was a daughter of the late Fred and Fannie Robinson. Graveside funeral services were held Tuesday, May 14, in Lincoln Park Cemetery, 1469 Post Rd., Warwick. Shiva was private. James Russo, 94, of Wampanoag Trail and formerly of Madeline Drive, East Providence, died Saturday, May 11, 2013, at Rhode Island Hospital. He was 94. He was the husband of the late Lucia "Lucy" (Capobianco) Russo, to whom he was married 55 years. He was born in Providence, a son of the late Carmine and Maria (Dolce) Russo. Russo was a professor of mathematics and chairman of the department at Roger Williams University and an attorney at law before retiring. He was also the first basketball coach. The James Russo award is presented to the Outstanding Student-Athlete of the year at Roger Williams.
