Budget Board Shutters Oldham School

The East Providence Budget Commission signs off on the plan to close Oldham Elementary School and move all of its students and staff to Meadowcrest.

The shutters were closed on Oldham Elementary School in Riverside on Thursday afternoon, Jan. 31. The East Providence Budget Commission approved the recommendation by Interim Superintendent John DeGoes and the East Providence School Committee to close the school at the end of this year. The budget board left the implementation of the closure plan and the costs that will be incurred up to the administration to address at future budget commission meetings.  “There will be a financial impact,” said Diane Brennan, chair of the budget commission. “I’m looking to the administration to come back to us." The city’s smallest elementary school is being closed almost entirely for financial reasons – it needs more than $2.1 million in health and …

School Board Votes to Close Oldham School in Riverside -- But With a Twist

Oldham pupils will now be transferred to Meadowcrest School, not Waddington; the Meadowcrest kids will go to Waddington instead under a new closure plan.

It will go before them Thursday afternoon, Jan. 31. “We’re changing their address only,” said Interim Superintendent John DeGoes of the pupils and staff at both schools. DeGoes said he came up with the second option to close Oldham after weighing the concerns of parents and other …

Hearing on Closing Oldham Tonight

The East Providence School Committee is hosting a public hearing in Riverside Middle School to allow people to comment on the recommendation to close Oldham Elementary School in Riverside.

A public hearing on the proposed closing of Oldham Elementary School in Riverside is tonight at the Riverside Middle School. It starts at 7 pm.  “The purpose of this public hearing is to hear rationale for and reaction to” the proposed closure, according to Interim Superintendent John DeGoes.  DeGoes made the recommendation to the School Committee on Jan. 10 after a charge by the East Providence Budget Commission to trim the budget by closing a school because of declining enrollment in the district. (See the Patch story.) “All interested parties are invited to attend and offer comments regarding this proposal,” DeGoes said.  In short, DeGoes told the School Committee: “It’s the best move at this time, the only move. Any other move would be…
