RIPTA is considering changes to all three bus routes in East Providence, including Rumford and Riverside, to help overcome a multimillion-dollar deficit. It will be looking for feedback tonight in Barrington on those proposed changes at the final public hearing scheduled on its review of transit services – known as a Comprehensive Operational Analysis. The public hearing will run from 6 to 8 pm in the public library on County Road next to the Barrington Town Hall. The RI Pubic Transit Authority has set up a Wednesday hearing in Barrington Public Library to get feedback on proposed bus service changes, including bus routes in Rumford, East Providence and Riverside.
The final public hearing on proposed changes to Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) service will be held in the Barrington Public Lbrary on Wednesday night, March 6. The hearing will run from 6 to 8 pm. It is set up to gather feedback on RIPTA’s statewide review of transit services -- deemed a Comprehensive Operational Analysis (COA). A Providence man, arrested early Wednesday morning after allegedly stabbing a Portsmouth woman on a Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) bus, was arraigned this afternoon in Second District Court. Christopher R. James, 46, who has a last-known address of 207 Rhodes St., Providence, was charged with first-degree domestic murder, according to WPRO. He did not enter a plea at his arraignment, according to the article. He is also being held without bail pending a hearing, reports The Providence Journal. The air quality warning has been issued for Rhode Island.
It's not summer in Rhode Island without an ozone alert day. The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) is predicting air quality will reach unhealthy levels Tuesday in most of the state, according to a news release. Regular RIPTA bus services will be free Tuesday, according to the DEM announcement. The Department of Health warns these unhealthy levels of ozone can cause throat irritation, coughing, chest pain, shortness of breath, increased susceptibility to respiratory infection and aggravation of asthma/other respiratory ailments – all worsened by exercise and heavy activity. Public transit is the service where those who care about the forgotten, underserved and disenfranchised in this society must not back down.
I am tempted to cite statistics that prove the value of public transportation to economic development; to give worker- and student-ridership percentages and the savings those riders realize by taking the bus; to present statistics on how ridership has gone up in recent years despite fare increases, to point out that we will never adequately reduce carbon emissions without robust public-transit systems; to elaborate the health benefits associated with the more active lifestyle of a transit rider and the improved air quality of communities with less congested roadways; et cetera.
