Grow Smart to Honor Rumford Center

The Rumford, East Providence, project will be recognized on June 10 at the second annual RI Smart Growth Award presentation.

Saying there is no better way to promote the many benefits of smart growth than to profile successful local examples, Grow Smart Rhode Island will honor individuals, plans and projects that play to Rhode Island’s strengths, generate sustainable economic benefits and improve communities and neighborhoods in the process. The Rumford Center in East Providence is one of the Outstanding Smart Growth Projects that will be recognized at the second annual Rhode Island Smart Growth Award presentation on June 10. The Monday evening reception and ceremony will start at 5:30 pm at the Hope Artiste Village in Pawtucket -- itself a 2012 award-winner for its redeveloped mill space that is home to more than 90 business tenants.   The public was invited to…

Virtues of Rumford Center Extolled

The Northeast Economic Development Association gives the Rumford Center its 2012 Project of the Year Award.

“This is not a small award,” said Scott Gibbs at the East Providence City Council meeting last Tuesday. “There was a lot of competition in 11 states.” Gibbs, the past president of the Northeast Economic Development Association, was referring to the 2012 Project of the Year Award given to the Rumford Center mixed-use development on Newman Avenue and the City of East Providence. “This project is everything we define as economic excellence,” he said. “And it started with a willing developer.” Peregrine Group and Kirkbrae Properties teamed up to convert the deteriorating former Rumford baking powder complex into shops, offices and loft living space. It opened about four years ago after being purchased for $3.8 million in November of 2006. …

Rumford Center Secures $15.5 Million to Add More Apartments and Finish Project

Massive mill renovation project moves into its final stages with a $15.5 million infusion of cash.

The five-year effort to rehabilitate and reuse the Rumford Chemical Works mill complex on Newman Avenue got a huge boost Tuesday when Webster Bank announced $15.5 million of financing that should help the developers finish the project. The mill complex is home to eight buildings with a mixture of 89 residential apartments and retail and office spaces. The most recognizable tenants are Seven Stars Bakery and the new Avenue N American Kitchen. Despite a still dormant housing industry, the rental market has been very good at Rumford Center. Nearly all of the 89 apartments are occupied, which is one reason the developers are using a chunk of the $15.5 million for new construction on vacant office spaces.
