The cost to mail a letter went up one cent yesterday, Jan. 27, according to the U.S. Postal Service. Make sure your mail goes out today with the correct amount of postage. Stamp prices went from 45 cents to 46 cents for a 1-ounce letter. The cost for letters weighing more than one ounce stayed the same -- 20 cents for each additional ounce, an announcement from the postal service says. Postcard stamps also saw a one-cent increase, from 32 cents to 33 cents. Letters under one ounce mailed anywhere internationally will cost $1.10, according to the postal service. You can still use Forever stamps, which are usable even with the change.

U.S. Postal Service rates are set to change by one cent on a First Class letter on Jan. 27.

Would you miss your post office if it closed? As we've become increasingly dependent on email and social media for communication, many of us have decreased our reliance on physical post offices. That trend is the reason the U.S. Postal Service is studying 3,700 of its locations to determine whether there's a demand to keep them open. In Rhode Island, 13 post offices are on that list, including a downtown Providence location and the main branch in Newport. Many in Massachusetts are also being studied. Just last night, the Postal Service held a public hearing about the possible closure of the downtown Providence office, located at Kennedy Plaza and known as the Annex.
