Honor Your Own Special Veteran

Post a photo and provide some information on that special East Providence veteran in your life.

Today is the observance of Veterans Day. It's a day to honor the men and women who have served in our nation's armed forces. Feel free to post a photo of a veteran from any era, from your great-grandfather to your neighbor's niece. We'd love to hear a little about the veteran, too, either in the photo caption or in the comment box at the bottom of this story. It's easy to post a photo! Just click on the "Submit my photo" button (in green) and then find the photo in your computer, click Open, and there you go. Provide some recognition for that special veteran in your life.

What's Open, What's Closed Today?

All government offices, schools and libraries are closed today for the observance of Veterans Day; most businesses are open.

Today is the federal observance of Veterans Day, a federal holiday that recognizes the nation's service men and women.  All federal, state and East Providence government buildings and offices are closed today. There will be no mail service. East Providence schools and libraries are closed, as well. Check your schedule for trash pickup this week. Usually, when a holiday falls on a Monday or Tuesday, trash pickup is the previous Saturday. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday pickups are delayed one day. Most restaurant and stores will be open their regular hours today, but you might want to call ahead. Banks vary, but most are closed. The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority will operate under its holiday schedule today. To view schedules, click …

Whichever day you prefer, it is a day for honoring veterans of  America's armed forces. But for millions of Americans, it's treated as just another holiday on the calendar – a day off from school, a day out of work, a three-day weekend. In towns and cities across America, grizzled veterans, Boy Scouts, politicians and a handful of others will attend small, quiet services. Is that enough? Do we as Americans do enough to recognize the nation's service men and women and the sacrifices they made and the responsibilities they took on to go to war or serve for us? Let people know what you think in the comment box below.

Everyday I wear my Vietnam Veteran's hat. Every day someone says thank you to me. Forty years ago, that is not what I would have heard if I had been foolish enough to wear that hat. To me, it is not what Americans do on one day to thank the Veterans. It is what they do every day. This is one veteran who does appreciate those thank you. In my experience, Americans do not wait for one day in …   more ›
